Course Details

In addition to developing your general English ability, the EAS Presessional Programme aims to improve your academic language skills in preparation for your future studies.

Students who successfully complete the EAS Course do not need to take the IELTS exam in order to progress to an academic programme.

What you will study

You will study two compulsory subjects in each term:

  • English and Academic Skills (9 hours per week)

  • English Language Development (6 hours per week)

You will  have individual tutorials with your tutor in addition to studying various skills in afternoon classes (6 hours per week). Depending upon the term of study, these may include:

  • Presentation Skills

  • Reading & Writing Development

  • Critical Thinking

  • Extended Academic Writing (a small research project)

  • Speaking & Seminar Skills

The combination of morning and afternoon  modules adds up to a total of 21 hours of lessons per week in classes which give you every opportunity to learn and develop the skills you need.

Requirements for Successful Completion

Progression is based on:

  • grades in continuous formal assessment

  • the final score in examinations (writing, reading and listening)

  • a final presentation

  • a minimum of 85% attendance

On successful completion of the course, postgraduate  students with conditional offers for the University of Birmingham will progress to the EAP or BME programmes. If students do not meet the required level for progression they will stay with us over the summer and, if they make the required progress, enter their programme directly in the Autumn term.

Please note: failure to complete the English course successfully will mean that you have not fulfilled the conditions of your offer. We will not be able to accept any other English language results after this point. Therefore, our offer to you to study at the University of Birmingham will be withdrawn for that academic year.

You may however, wish to resubmit your application or defer your entry to the following academic year, in order to continue to improve your level of English and to meet our language requirements.
