International Foundation Programme in Business, Law, Arts and Social Sciences

Who is the International Foundation Programme (IFP) for?

The IFP is a one-year programme for International, academically able, well motivated students who come from countries where the final school leaving certificate is not accepted for direct entry onto undergraduate degree programmes at the University of Birmingham.

This is normally the case where students have only 12 years of primary and secondary education.

Successful completion of the IFP in Business, Law, Arts and Social Sciences guarantees you a place on the selected undergraduate programmes available here. Continuation programmes include:

PLEASE NOTE:  This programme is only open to and appropriate for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS for whom English is a foreign language and who have NOT taken A Levels or the IB.

What will I study?

The International Foundation Programme is a modular programme which combines subject specific content in Business, Economics, Political & Social Aspects of Britain, Key Developments in European Thought, Academic English skills, Managing Data and Project Writing.

By the end of the course you will have:

  • the language competence to deal with your undergraduate degree

  • effective study skills

  • an understanding of the key concepts and vocabulary for your degree

  • communication skills

  • critical thinking, analytical skills and cultural awareness

  • research and independent study skills

What facilities are available to me? As a full member of the university, you will have complete access to the university libraries, computer facilities, sports and recreational facilities.

Is accommodation provided? The university provides a wide range of single and en-suite accommodation on campus within walking distance of Westmere to suit students' needs. The university guarantees international students accommodation if they apply by the deadline. Housing services also offers advice for students looking for accommodation in the private sector.
