Business Management English Presessional

BME Programme Director's Report 2010

The Business Management English Presessional (BME) is an intensive programme that focuses on the language, key concepts and study skills necessary for academic and professional success.

The emphasis is on English language improvement in the four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking through the use of business and management content materials, such as case studies, journal articles and business and management text books.  Students also attend weekly subject-specialist lectures from July onwards.

The BME Presessional is excellent preparation if you are:

(1) An international postgraduate student who has either a conditional offer for a GDBA, MBA, MSc or PhD in the Birmingham Business School at the University of Birmingham.  It is particularly useful for those studying:

  • Accounting
  • Business
  • Commerce
  • Finance
  • Human Resource Management
  • International Business
  • Investments
  • Management
  • Marketing

(2) A business professional who would like to improve your English within a context of Business and Management (minimum five week enrolment).

The BME Presessional programme is available in 20, 15, 10 or 6-week courses. The length of course that is appropriate for you depends on your offer from the Business School and your current level of English. For a table explaining the entry levels click here.

Please note: failure to complete the BME Presessional course successfully will mean that you have not fulfilled the conditions of your offer.  The University will not be able to accept any other English language results after this point. Therefore, your offer to study at the University of Birmingham will be withdrawn for that academic year.

You may, however, wish to resubmit your application or defer your entry to the following academic year while you continue to improve your level of English  to meet our language requirements.
