English & Academic Skills Intensive Summer Course

We offer a full-time, intensive 3 week course in September which is for students who have already met the English language requirements related to their academic course and hold an unconditional offer. The course can be taken separately, or combined with the 6-week English & Study Skills Summer Course to make a longer period of study.

The EAS Intensive Summer Course aims to develop
  • language accuracy and fluency for academic writing, reading, listening and speaking
  • the ability to write academic papers
  • reading skills, particularly of academic articles
  • the ability to listen to lectures and discussions and take notes
  • seminar skills
  • critical thinking skills
  • independence as a learner of English
  • presentation skills
  • study skills for a successful academic course of study

There is a different topic focus each week which provides a foundation for classes in the skills mentioned above.  These provide input for a weekend homework assignment written using standard academic conventions.

The courses use a combination of different teaching styles and techniques, which will include

  • group, pair and whole class work
  • skills based and integrated skills work
  • collaborative and independent learning
  • projects and presentations
  • paper based and computer based study

The course is assessed through weekly assignments, seminar tasks and speaking and listening activities.

Classes are from 9.30 - 1.00 with a 30 minute break at 11.00 from Monday to Friday, and 2.15 - 3.45 from Monday to Thursday.

There is a full and active social programme.  If you would like to see an example, click here.
