Sophia Butt

Sophia Butt holds a double-joint BA (Hons) in English & Sociology, an MA in the Special Applications of Linguistics (University of Birmingham) and the Cambridge CELTA.  She is also a trained IELTS examiner.

She joined the University of Birmingham (UoB) in 1997 as a tutor and external examiner on the Distance MA in Translation Studies at the Centre for English Language Studies (CELS). Since 2000, Sophia’s work has centred around English for Academic/Specific Purposes (EAP/ESP) at the English for International Students Unit (EISU).  She has taught on a range of courses offered by EISU, including the multidisciplinary EAP Presessional (2000-2005), and the Business Management English (BME) Presessional (2006- ).  Recently, she represented the UoB on three examining trips to Amirkabir University, Iran.

In 2008, Sophia was appointed as Director of the BME Presessional Programme. During the Autumn and Spring terms, she teaches in-sessional ESP workshops for postgraduates at the Birmingham Business School, lunchtime Open Access EAP classes, and one-to-one tutorials – all run by EISU.

Sophia has authored in-house publications for the BME Programme; CELS’ distance MA in Translation Studies; Aston University’s MBA course and the BScBA Program at the Helsinki School of Economics, Finland. She has also designed materials for taught PhD students in the Czech Republic. Additional interests: forensic linguistics and translation.
