Computer-based learning can be a valuable addition to classroom study. We have therefore developed our own online materials especially designed to help you improve your English and EISU actively encourages students to maximise their progress by using Birmingham University’s extensive IT facilities.
The resources available to our students include:
- Virtual Learning Environment
The university uses WebCT – a web based teaching and learning tool – which can be used on and off campus to access course materials, take part in online student discussions and chat rooms, submit homework and communicate with staff. All students are given access to WebCT on arrival and receive training on how to get the most out of this programme.
- Language support
EISU offers detailed online language support which focuses on specific aspects of written English which are especially difficult for international students. This support – also called kibbitzing – allows students to analyse examples of problem language areas and then do exercises to help them improve their academic writing skills. Click here to find out more about kibbitzers.
- Computer Rooms
There are a number of computer suites around the university, some of which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, EISU has its own dedicated computer room at the Selly Oak campus which is used for classroom teaching, as a digital language laboratory and for independent study. There is also a Learning Support Coordinator available during lunch breaks and after classes to offer help and advice to students who use these facilities.
- Useful Websites
We have selected some of the best English language development websites for you to visit and use. Click here to view these links. A more extensive selection is available to EISU students through WebCT.
